FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is this for real?

Yes! Well, real political satire. Marry An American is a site designed to build solidarity between Americans and Canadians while providing comic relief from a political climate that is really anything but funny. While George W. Bush’s views and polices are antithetical to the values most Canadians hold dear, we know that the U.S. government does not represent the values of a great number of the American people. We feel our progressive brothers and sisters’ pain. And we feel it is time for Canadians to share our gift of citizenship in this liberal utopia through the loving bond of politically motivated matrimony. It’s the least we can do.

I’ve spotted a cute boy/girl while browsing through the profiles. How do I contact him/her?

Well, sadly you can’t – at least not yet. This is a satire site after all, for entertainment purposes only. MarryAnAmerican.ca is run by a small group of committed volunteers who don’t have the resources to make this a fully-functioning dating site. We are, however, continuing to build additional functionality into the site each day so who knows – maybe if we get a large cash donation from a wealthy benefactor, we can make this a ‘real’ dating site. Keep checking back!

I submitted a profile, but it’s not on the site – why is that?

Did we mention that we are a small group of volunteers? The popularity of this site has far exceeded our expectations (we really were hoping for a Kerry victory and a dud of a site, we swear) so we haven’t been able to post profiles as fast as we receive them. Many thousands of you have sent in profiles, and we posting new ones every day, so keep checking.

What was the inspiration for this?

The inspiration behind Marry An American is twofold. We felt strong empathy for progressive Americans stuck living under the Bush regime and thought it very important to reach out to these people, but we also wanted to get dates. Combining these goals seemed only natural, and www.marryanamerican.ca was born.

What do we hope to achieve?

We hope to promote solidarity and goodwill by letting progressive Americans know we care and that they are not alone. With the world so divided, we’d like to facilitate a sense of community and poke a bit of fun of ourselves while we’re at it. And if we can introduce a few new people to toques and Timbits along the way, it’ll just make the process that much more rewarding.

Are we really going to marry Americans?

It’s too soon to say… While we don’t necessarily advocate marrying strangers met on the internet, we’re not opposed to the idea either – if the stranger is progressive and really hot.

How many visitors has the site attracted?

As of Thursday, November 18, we have had over 750,000 visitors. The vast majority of these have come to us since November 2.

Who is behind this website?

Marry An American is a project of THIS Magazine www.thismagazine.ca and Geekend www.geekend.ca. On the weekend of October 20, a dozen hot single Canadian liberals with diverse skills got together in a Toronto office and put together this site, marking the first ever geekend – defined as
“1. A weekend spent alone in front of a computer or similarly engaging creative tool,” or
“2. A digital barn raising, bringing together enthusiastic individuals to collectively create novel technologies, start digital brush fires and have [geek] fun”. Cool, eh?
